The department is responsible for scientific research and development projects. It provides advice, as well as management, in relation to applications for internal, external and international funding.
This research and art research institute deals with research into creation in scenic arts in the age of technical media with an emphasis on the actual process of creation and reflection on it. It guarantees doctoral studies in stage design and theory of creation in scenic arts (scenology) open to graduates of DAMU master's courses and graduates from other fields. The Institute for the Theory and History of Creation in Scenic Arts (in 2004 it was renamed the Institute for Dramatic and Scenic Art Research) was established in 2001 on the initiative of leading teachers of the Department of Theory and Criticism, the Director of which was Jaroslav Vostrý. In 2015, Prof. Zuzana Sílová became the Director of the Institute for Theory of Creation in Scenic Arts.
The DAMU academic department was established in 2001 on the initiative of the then Head of Department of Creative Writing and Pedagogy, Prof. Ivan Vyskočil. The mission of the institute is to research into generally conceived acting and its preconditions, with emphasis on the field of authorial acting, authorial and experimental creation, dramatic culture, play, acting, psychosomatics and pedagogy. Since 2020, Dr. Martina Musilová has been Director of the Institute.
The main research aim of the Institute is fulfilled within the project Interdisciplinary research of stage component interaction in puppet and alternative theatre and in theatre in special needs groups. Its basic principle is support of creative interaction between scholarly research, technological development and the field of contemporary alternative and puppet theatre and theatre in special needs groups. As a result, one can observe innovative, theoretical, methodological and applied progress with consequences beyond the borders of the theatre world.
