At the suggestion of the Theater Faculty, an honorary doctorate will be awarded to director Thomas Ostermeier on November 20, 2025, at 11 a.m. in the Martinů Hall of the Music and Dance Faculty. Thomas Ostermeier will receive the title for his extraordinary contribution to the development of contemporary European theater.
Thomas Ostermeier (born 1968) is a prominent German theater director and, since 1999, artistic director of Berlin's Schaubühne am Lehniner Platz. He is internationally renowned for his penetrating interpretations of classical and contemporary plays and his stage adaptations of non-dramatic texts. Ostermeier's productions are valued for their social and political dimension, his precise work with actors, and his distinctive aesthetic language, which is consistently based on the staged material. He is a regular guest at leading institutions and major festivals around the world and has received numerous awards, including the Golden Lion for Lifetime Achievement at the Venice Biennale. Ostermeier's contribution to European drama is crucial not only in terms of artistic practice, but also in terms of theater pedagogy. DAMU students have already had two opportunities to become acquainted with his specific pedagogical and creative method.
The ceremony will be preceded by the conference Art and Science: Thinking Outside the Box.
