Když O. Kokoschka v r. 1935 portrétoval v Lánech T. G. Masaryka, vyčetl prezident v
jednom starém lexikonu, že malířovo jméno, které se vyskytuje i v jiných slovanských
jazycích, znamená někdy kočku, jindy kohoutka, v češtině je to však kokoška pastuší
tobolka, tedy plevel. Oba je to tehdy prý dost pobavilo, protože jak přísloví praví, mráz kopřivu nespálí.

Jaký význam nese pojem kokoška dnes a pro nás? Uchopit ho může být stejně tak
záludné jako se pokoušet rozklíčovat rozsáhlou a diverzní tvorbu autora, který nás
inspiruje možná spíš než jako malíř, jako básník, dramatik a především pak jako bystrý
pozorovatel světa a života okolo sebe. A nejspíš právě proto se hlavní inspirací projektu
stávají Kokoschkovy básnické i dramatické texty a jeho vlastní biografie. Především v
jeho nejranější tvorbě, ve zdánlivě mladistvé poetické naivitě sbírky básní Snící chlapci
a úderně vyzrálé sofistikovanosti dramatu Vrah, naděje žen, můžeme sledovat
krystalicky čistý zdroj Kokoschkovy inspirace, kterým je - jak prostě - žena. V době
vzniku zmíněných prací viděl Kokoschka jen dvě možná východiska ze vztahové
konfrontace: buď se ženě dvořit, nebo si ji podrobit. V mezinárodní a mezigenerační
divadelní instalaci Kokoška tato východiska rozvádíme, uvádíme do dnešního kontextu,
obracíme naruby a zkoumáme ze všech námi dosažitelných úhlů pohledu.

In 1935, when O. Kokoschka was painting T.G. Masaryk’s portrait in Lány, the president read in
an old lexicon, that the painter's name, which also occurs in other Slavic languages, sometimes
means a cat, other time a rooster. However, in the Czech language, it stands for Shepherd’s
Purse – a ruderal plant. It is said that this meaning has amused them, as the saying goes “bad weeds are hard to kill.”

What sense does the term Kokoschka carry today? Seizing its full meaning could be as tricky as
trying to puzzle out extensive and diverse work of an artist, which inspires us today more as a
poet, a playwright and an insightful observer of the world and life around than a painter. That
may be most likely the reason why the main inspiration of the project is Kokoschka’s poems
and, dramatic texts, and his biography. Most importantly in his pioneering works, in the
seemingly youthful poetic naivety of collection of poems The Dreaming Boys and strikingly
mature sophistication of drama Murderer, the Hope of Women, we can observe the pure source
of Kokoschka’s inspiration, which merely is - a woman. During the creation of mentioned works,
Kokoschka saw only two possible ways out from relational confrontation: either to court a
woman or to give in to her. In this international and multigenerational theatre production
Kokoschka, such solutions are developed, put into today's perspective, turned upside down and examined from all points of view.
