The Prague Summer Theatre School
at the Theatre Faculty of the Academy of Performing Arts
(DAMU)
June 12th to July 2nd 2011
Special 2011 Edition
in Collaboration with the Prague Quadrennial of Performance Design and Space
The Theatre Faculty of the Academy of Performing Arts in Prague (DAMU) is pleased to announce a three-week summer theatre school in authorial and alternative theatre forms. Courses are in English and will take place at DAMU, located in the heart of Prague’s historical center.
The Prague Summer Theatre School is rooted in the Czech Republic’s long history of puppet and object theatre, and its unique contributions to small-forms and authorial theatre since the 1950s. This year's PSTS is being presented in partnership with the Prague Quadrennial of Performance, Design and Space (PQ 2011).
Overview
The Prague Summer Theatre School (PSTS) provides theatre students and practitioners with a diverse, hands-on immersion in the basic principles and practices of authorial and alternative theatre forms. At the PSTS, students may study acting and improvisation, site-specific and interactive theatre, puppet and object theatre, solo authorial presentations, non-verbal performance, contact improvisation and (Inter)acting with the Inner Partner. The PSTS 2011 includes five different courses to choose from.
Three three-week long introductory courses will offer students an intensive sample of the best of what DAMU has to offer. Enlivening the Performer introduces students to the disciplined process of developing and training a positive potential to perform creatively on stage. Presenting Performance immerses students in three fundamental authorial and alternative theatre forms: group site-specific and interactive theatre, puppet and object theatre and solo authorial presentations, each with a different tutor. Students work toward a final performance at the end of the third week. The (Inter)acting with the Inner Partner Intensive is for those who have never study the discipline as well as more experienced students. (Inter)acting with the Inner Partner is a multidisciplinary, psychosomatic (psycho-physical) solo improvisation discipline developed by Professor Ivan Vyskočil, a celebrated writer, actor and teacher and founder of the Department of Authorial Creativity and Education, DAMU. The discipline studies and nurtures the dynamics of creative, playful and spontaneous (inter)acting.
For students interested in a more compact experience, two new two-week intensives will be offered for the first time in 2011: the Puppetry Intensive - Releasing the Hidden Energy of Objects and Puppets and the Nonverbal and Comedy Theatre
Intensive.
An afternoon of seminars in modern Czech theatre history will accompany these primarily studio-based programs. Access to the school’s theatrical and technical facilities (theatre and rehearsal spaces, internet) is included.
Discover the PQ 2011 and Prague’s theatre scene
In 2011, the Prague Summer Theatre School is collaborating and running concurrently with the internationally renowned Prague Quadrennial of Performance Design and Space (PQ). On top of its regular program, the PSTS will offer its students special seminars and expert-led tours of exhibits. This year students will also have the opportunity to attend a host of PQ and Scenofest events (exhibits, lectures, workshops, performances) by students and prominent professionals from around the world. Students will also be encouraged to attend recommended performances with DAMU teaching staff at local venues in order to experience Prague’s theatre scene.
The intensive is an excellent way for non-Czech speaking students to acquaint themselves with DAMU, especially for those who may be interested in applying for its Erasmus program and/or the M.A. programs in English.
The working language of the summer school is English, but students will be encouraged to take advantage of their native language and culture.
Application Deadline
Applications accepted from January 10TH, 2011 to April 30th, 2011. The PSTS admits qualified students on a first-come, first-served basis.
