M.A. Degree Programs
The Theatre Faculty of the Academy of Performing Arts in Prague (DAMU) is a modern, university-level art school. It has been attracting young artists with a broad cultural perspective and intense desire for profound learning since its founding in 1946. DAMU is a highly selective school that provides professional training and education in all the branches of theatre creation: acting, directing, dramaturgy, stage design, theory and criticism, arts (theatre) management, authorial acting and drama in education. These programs span more traditional theatrical spheres, like directing classical drama, yet include more alternative ones, like devising performance and puppetry; all provide students with the opportunity to integrate theatrical knowledge and skill with artistic experimentation. The school offers bachelor’s, master’s and doctoral level degree programs in Czech and a number of master’s degree programs in English.
The most important personalities of contemporary Czech theatrical life teach here, and a number of important foreign professionals work as guest professors – inclu- ding Charles Marowitz, Oleg Tabakov, Patrice Pavis, to name a few. The school has a growing network of vibrant international contacts, and actively encourages residen- cies at various leading European schools. Studying at DAMU is a challenge for the daring, talented and creative individual. Many graduates find prestigious employment in the foremost theatres in Czech Republic as well as in television and film. Others establish independent companies, act as free-lance theatre artists, become theatre critiques or scholars, realize managerial and organizational skills as arts managers or producers, or blaze new paths as performative authors in the broadest sense of the term.
Situated in the very centre of the city at the heart of Prague’s UNESCO heritage site, DAMU offers modern theatre facilities, including a 150-seat school theatre, a 40- seat black box theatre, 8 small studios, a recording studio, computer rooms, a school library and students’ club. Studying in a European capital known for its rich cultural life and considerable, yet manageable, dense network of theatres, galleries and art cinemas, adds a truly cosmopolitan facet to a DAMU education.
Building on the experience and success of our master’s program in Stage Design, the Theatre Faculty has opened new master programs in English. I am optimistic you will find a program of study that meets your needs and interests. I look forward to welcoming you to DAMU International as one of our students.
